This is a wonderful netbook. I bought this cause I needed to do work when I am stuck at school and didn't want to drive back home waste gas. It does everything I need it to: surf the web, write documents, email, and it's portable. I use this laptop as a means to do work at school since I didn't want to buy a regular laptop. I already have a desktop at home, so I use this netbook as a means of doing SMALL AMOUNTS of works while at school.
Because it's a netbook I know not to expect it to work like a Macbook or any other fast-pace, high-capacity laptop. It's not meant for that type of functionality.
Bottom line: This is an awesome laptop if you are looking for something to do your work at a coffee shop like read and write documents and emailing.
It is not for those of you who tend to have more than 3+ programs running. Here's a quick analogy: netbooks are like little kids, if you ask them to carry an item for you they will only probably carry one or two items no more than 5 pounds. Regular laptops are adults who can carry about 5+ items about 50 pounds (depending on the adult) and not have a problem.
The processor (Intel Atom) on this netbook will not match up to regular processors like Core 2 Duos.
Do not buy this laptop if it's going to be your ONLY laptop. Buy it for convenience and portability.

I've had my hp mini for about a month now, and I just love it. It is super portable, and easy to use. I can connect to the internet in a flash!
I really like the built-in webcam, it has got a lot of use so far and the picture is superior to most webcams I've used in the past.
The only thing I don't like so far is Windows 7, but mostly just because it's an adjustment. I have, however, mostly adjusted to it by now.
So far I have had no issues with the short battery life. Most places I go I can plug it in, and if I can't it's no big deal.
I have a large music library that has barely made a dent in the hard drive.
So far, no complaints, totally happy with my purchase!

I'd never heard of MSi - before browsing online for a laptop a couple months ago, but must say I am very impressed with the quality of this little laptop! It's nicer than the 00 Dell I use at the office.
At 12", this computer was the perfect size for me. I was underwhelmed by the traditional 10" netbooks when I tried them out at a local retailer - screen was too small for me, and I didn't care for the cramped keyboard. Nor the Windows 7 starter edition or slow CPU.
Enter the MSi U230 - I've got the single core AMD Neo MV-40, but rarely ever notice any slow down. I would have spent the additional for the dual core version, but it wasn't released yet when I bought my computer (it's still hard to find from most online retailers!).
Pros:
-Faster CPU compared to traditional netbooks with Intel Atom chip
-Windows 7 Home Premium (runs fast)
-2 gb Ram, upgradeable to 4 gb (I did this on a whim, wasn't really necessary as Ram doesn't max out at 2 gb most of the time)
-Full sized keyboard makes typing easy with little frustration
-1366x768 resolution, lots of space for desktop icons, web browsing, watching videos
-SD card slot, webcam, 3 usb connectors
-ultraportable size and weight (but you don't get a cd/dvd drive - I suggest picking up an external one)
Cons:
-4 hour battery life as advertised is a stretch
-Won't perform as well as larger, dual core CPUs notebooks
In reference to battery life, it's advertised as 4 hours but I've found around 3 hours is more realistic. However, you can undervolt the CPU by about 20%, without losing any performance. I get stable performance at 0.85v at 8x and 0.70v at 4x using RMClock. Doing so I've stretched the battery life to over 4 hours with light computer tasks (running spreadsheets, web browsing, etc.).
Overall I highly recommend this laptop, especially if you are just looking for a laptop to compliment a desktop system, and aren't happy with traditional netbooks.

W7 starter is as basic an OS as there is out there. only personal pref's & usage requirements can be used to rate said OS. those oh-so-many who are opposed to it might very well be expecting too much out of a mere netbook. it's 289.99-300 USD, for gigabyte's sake.

I was looking at the Macbooks, which are 1500, because I need something with some power. But in order for the screen to be big enough for some pro audio stuff that I wanted to be able to see, I needed the 15 or 17.
But those are ridiculously expensive and a 17" monitor basically negates the purpose of HAVING a "lap" top.
So this is what I did, and I can only recommend it. I ended up getting a 21.5" imac desktop for my power (which I got for 1050 with a student discount) and I got this netbook for right around 400.
I LOVE IT!
I have all the portability AND I have the massive big mac screen for when I'm at home.
This is basically a perfect laptop, as far as I'm concerned, especially with Windows 7 (which I'm almost convinced beats Mac Snow Leopard for basic functionality and flexibility) and Rocketdock (if you haven't used this, get it. It's a doc for windows and, once customized away from the annoying presets you get when you download it and refreshed with newer icons, it IS better than the mac dock.)
In short, get this laptop. You won't regret it. There's not a lot of EXTRA screen space, but there's all you need. This is what laptops are supposed to be.
I made the mistake of putting some graphics software on there right after I got it which was supposed to change the entire look of the windows interface, and that software in turn messed up the computer. But it was super easy and quick to restore the whole thing because there's a hidden partition in the computer which can basically copy an image of what the hard drive looked like when it was first shipped onto the primary hard drive. You can also simply restore windows. So even if you get some buggy software, "reformatting" and "reinstalling windows" can be done in about 30 minutes TOTAL. It doesn't get better than that.

(And get the rocketdock and taskbar eliminator, both of which you can search for on google. they dramatically enhance the windows 7 experience.)
