Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (White) Review

I go to an online college and was using a laptop for this. I was getting tired of how heavy it is, bulky and HOT, oh, so dang hot! I asked a few people what their thoughts were on getting a netbook and got several different opinions (don't get this brand, get an iPad [for my school?? what??], don't get a netbook at all). I got two opinions which was to get this netbook. I only need it for school and for email. I want to be able to take it with me to where ever I want to go without carrying 50 pound laptop [exaggerating]. Of course some people still think online college isn't a real college... ugh.
The keyboard is nice. I found that the small reduction in percentage is not that big of a deal. My husband hates it, saying it's way too small for him... yet, he still uses it. Hmmm.
Start up was good. However, I did have issues with it networking to my router. I reduced security on the router a tad after so many troubleshooting efforts failed. That worked! I'm not a networking expert, though I do have some knowledge. It took me two days to figure that out.
Battery life hasn't been an issue. It goes all day from morning until I go to sleep. I plug it in right before bed and it gets about 8 hours of uninteruppted charge, which is good for the battery.
I find that it is a little slower than my laptop. I posted one of the gagets of RAM usage on my desktop to see about what it uses in physical memory, seems it stays around 47%. I try not to open too many applications for it to go any slower. I will look at upgrading the RAM here in a few months. I'm not really complaining since I knew what it came with, so I am just adding to discussion.
I found it pretty cheap at Walmart. I also did quite a bit of research on other comparable units made by different manufacturers. HP/Dell/Sony... the list goes on. They were way overpriced! This was very reasonable for what it does, plus I get a deduction on my taxes for being a student purchasing an item that is used for my studies. It is a win-win.
One little gripe is the Microsoft key is not working out for me. I am going to do a fix on this and see how that turns out. Lucky for me, my sister is an AF communications airman... so she can help out with me on this.
All-in-all, I am happy with this purchase and would love to give it 4.5 stars.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-PU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook (Up to 14 Hours of Battery Life) Review

Don't kid yourself: this is not a "cheap" alternative to a laptop computer available at five times the cost. Nor is it a desktop replacement. Instead, this is a device for people who are willing to accept performance trade-offs in a laptop that is eminently totable and has (for my purposes) very long battery life. If you understand this going in, you'll be extremely pleased with this computer!
A few notes. The display on this computer is as good as they say; crisp, bright, and fairly economical draining the battery. The WiFi performance, especially in patchy spots, is as good as any proper laptop I've used. The sound quality of the audio I/O (even through a decent pair of headphones) does the job, but isn't great. The keyboard/mouse are quite usable, but it did take me a week to get used to it; the Acer line of netbooks seems to have a nicer keyboard, at least. The battery life, yow! This guy running full-bore (display at 80% brightness, max processor and WiFi performance, etc.) gives more than 8 hours of uninterrupted use. More conservative settings will easily yield 9 or more hours uptime on a charge, and you'll get close to the advertised 14 hours if the system idles with the display off (but with WiFi running). The bluetooth capability has proven useful for making Skype calls with my wireless earpiece. I've found that the utility of the system is enhanced when paired with an inexpensive graphics tablet (e.g, Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet). And despite the hand-wringing about Windows 7 vs XP in other reviews, unless you're relying on old software, you'll be glad you sprung for Windows 7. (And I'm as stunned as anyone:) Microsoft actually did a decent enough job with 7, and the "Starter" version included with this laptop has proven able enough for my purposes without a RAM upgrade.
Despite the fact that I purchased this computer primarily for travel use, it's become a fixture in my study, where even a larger laptop would be too cumbersome and noisy. And yet, I'm able to tote it into the field when I need to for processing nocturnal bird vocalizations using CLO Raven Pro. (Long batterty life really pays off for fieldwork.) Quite a system. Nice job, ASUS!

Cheap ! ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Pearl White Netbook – 7 Hour Battery Life
ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Pearl White Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life Review

This netbook is everything I thought it would be and I love everything about it. I purchased mine through Newegg for 20 bucks cheaper, free shipping and a free notebook mouse. They've since deactivated this netbook on their site, so I decided to review on here rather than let my opinion go to waste.
Right out of the box it's very snappy and processes everything super quick. Even with 1gb of ram it's runs most everything very well, (Firefox, OpenOffice, Pidgin and AVG to name a few.) Youtube videos stream well, but HD quality can be choppy (I'm not picky.)
The keyboard is intuitive and is easy to type on with even for someone with larger hands. As far as wireless signal, I've had absolutely no trouble picking up or maintaining strong signals. The screen is bright and the colors are vibrant. Probably the biggest surpirse from owning this is that it took no time at all to adjust from a 22" LCD to this little 10" screen.
Battery? I didn't expect to pull the advertised 7 hours, however, I can usually do a sweet 4.5-5 hours with regular use. I have not tested the built-in web-cam thoroughly, so I can't pass judgement on that.
I have only found two cons and they're, in my opinion, minor. As other reviewers here have said, there is no light for caps lock. Super minor, I know - but if you're typing in a password it can be frustrating. Keeping in mind that I've never owned a laptop before, the other "con" I've found is the trackpad. You could chalk it up that I'm not used to it yet, but it can be a little sporadic and is super sensitive. I use a mouse the majority of the time anyway, so it doesn't really bother me.
Overall, I give it 5 stars. I have no regrets buying this netbook and I would recommend it.

Cheap ! HP Mini 110-1030NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – 6.75 Hours of Battery Life
HP Mini 110-1030NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 6.75 Hours of Battery Life Review

I bought this for travel purposes. I used to have an HP Omnibook 800 (it's still around in the closet somewhere), which is sort of an ancestor of this idea, but with a much higher battery burn rate, due to the technology of the day. I ran Linux on it, and wrote my Ph.D. thesis on the thing. The form factor is great.
Today I find that technology and marketing have finally caught up with the idea of small form factor laptops, and they work better too. The Intel atom is a fairly powerful chip; it runs my software (which is all mathematical in nature, and more or less a direct test of CPU speed) at speeds comparable to a core duo Macbook at a slightly higher clock rate. I'm impressed. Even more impressive is the battery life, which, compared to the macbook, seems virtually infinite. It also loaded Ubuntu 9.10 fairly painlessly: much easier than upgrading OS-X on a macbook, and it seems to work better with limited memory. No reason to use the pre-loaded WinXP, though I kept it around just in case. Over all it seems very sturdy; I'm not worried about dropping this one. This particular model also has an excellent matte screen; glossy screens annoy the bejeepers out of me. Speaking of gloss, the dumb swirlie patterns on the case do help disguise finger markings a bit, however, making the case out of matte plastic (like the Omnibook was) would have worked better.
Downsides: the battery does stick out annoyingly. It's a clever engineering compromise, but it is a pain when you try to stash the thing in anything resembling a standard netbook case. I haven't gotten used to the weird trackpad yet: I don't see why they didn't stick the buttons underneath like everyone else does. Maybe a trackpad that much closer to the keyboard would have been inconvenient in a different way, so I'll live with it.

Cheap ! Microsoft Money 2002 Standard
Microsoft Money 2002 Standard Review

I have been using Microsoft Money since about 1996. I upgraded to 2002 in the beginning of 2002. I am amazed at what this program can do. It is such a time-saver. I am using the background banking. Even when Money is closed it automatically pulls in my transactions for my credit card and broker account.
I was delinquent in reconciling my checking by 5 months. After I imported the transactions (took about 2 minutes), I was able to reconcile all 5 months in about 2 minutes flat. Somehow, it seemed to know which transactions to associate with the month I was reconciling. The hard part was finding my statements to balance to. If only my credit union would sign up for the direct banking so that I could use background banking.
I love the ease of using the reports. They are easily customizable. Also, if you want to see the transactions behind a certain category you can right mouse click to see the detail.
I cannot understand why so many people are unsatisfied with this product. I find it an intuitive program that contains a powerhorse of tools. It seems like I am constantly discovering new things it can do.
